Product and Mold Design Methods

Parties Involved:

  • Student(s): Aaron West,  Amy Herrman,  Angran Xiao
Faculty Member(s):  Dave Rosen,  Janet Allen,  Farrokh Mistree
    Industry Member(s):  NSF

Brief Project Description:

  • The team here pursues to translate a product design description into fabrication process plans, including process plans for polymer or powder injection molding.
  • Given preliminary input, our testbed will select the appropriate component material and fabrication process and complete the molding process.
  • Research will first focus on the development of a methodology for performing design-for-manufacturing of parts to be produced using RP technologies.
  • Problem formulations will be developed based on the Decision Supprt Problem Technique, as problem solution methods will be approached accordingly to selection and compromise Decision Support Problems and evolutionary optimization methods.
  • This research is closely related to the Assessing RP/RT Usefulness project.
